Systematic position: The California oak moth (Phryganidia californica) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Dioptidae. This insect is widely recognized as a significant defoliator of oak trees in the coastal regions of California. Its periodic outbreaks are a natural but destructive phenomenon in local woodland ecosystems.

Host plants: The pest primarily attacks oak species (genus Quercus). The coast live oak (Quercus agrifolia) is the most preferred host, although other evergreen and deciduous oak species can also be heavily impacted during severe outbreak years. The pest is highly specialized, meaning its life cycle is intricately tied to the phenology of these specific trees.

Biology and life cycle: Depending on the geographic location and climatic conditions, the California oak moth typically undergoes two to three generations per year. Eggs are deposited in clusters on the undersides of leaves. The larvae go through several instars before pupating on the branches or trunks of the host trees. The ability of the species to overwinter as larvae or pupae contributes to its resilience and rapid population growth.

  • Monitoring population levels using sticky traps.
  • Encouraging natural predators such as parasitic wasps and predatory stink bugs.
  • Applying biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) for targeted control.
  • Implementing tree health care practices to improve resistance to stress.
Regular pruning and maintaining tree vigor are also essential to help oaks withstand moderate defoliation events.
