The genus Phyllocoptes belongs to the Eriophyidae family, a group commonly known as four-legged or gall mites. These are microscopic arthropods that are virtually invisible to the naked eye. Due to their vermiform body shape, they excel at inhabiting the smallest crevices of plant tissues, such as between leaf scales or deep within dormant buds.
Phyllocoptes species are known to affect various plants, including fruit trees, ornamentals, and berry bushes. By feeding on the epidermal cells of the host, they inject saliva that triggers unusual growth responses. This often leads to the formation of galls, leaf rolling, or russeting, which not only looks unsightly but also impairs the plant's metabolic processes.

They typically overwinter as fertilized females in protected spots like bark crevices or beneath bud scales.
