Description

The plum gall mite (Phyllocoptes abaenus) is a microscopic pest belonging to the order Acariformes and the family Eriophyidae. Due to their extremely small size and worm-like shape, these pests are invisible to the naked eye and are primarily detected by the characteristic damage they cause to host plants.

This mite specifically attacks stone fruit species, most notably plum (Prunus domestica) and myrobalan plum. The pests primarily colonize the developing leaves and buds, where they feed on cellular sap by inserting their mouthparts into the plant tissues.

The life cycle is synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. Fertilized females overwinter in protected sites such as bark crevices or under bud scales. As soon as temperatures rise in the spring and buds begin to swell, the mites move to the fresh foliage to initiate their reproduction cycle, producing multiple generations per season.

The primary symptom of an infestation is the formation of galls — abnormal tissue growths or leaf deformations. These galls interfere with the plant's photosynthetic process, causing severe physiological stress, which often results in stunted leaf growth, premature leaf drop, and decreased fruit production.

Integrated pest management strategies for Phyllocoptes abaenus include:

  • Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce the population.
  • Timely application of acaricides during the critical phase of bud break and early leaf development.
  • Ensuring healthy orchard hygiene to prevent overwintering sites.
