The almond rust mite (Phyllocoptes amygdali) is a member of the Eriophyidae family, known as gall or rust mites. These microscopic pests are specialized feeders that primarily target almond trees, potentially causing significant economic impact in commercial orchards.
This mite specifically affects the foliage of almond trees. By feeding on the epidermal cells, it disrupts the normal physiological processes of the leaves, leading to visible distress that can affect the overall health and vigor of the entire tree if the infestation is severe.
The life cycle of Phyllocoptes amygdali is synchronized with the almond growth stages. Adult females overwinter in bark crevices or near bud scales.
