Phyllocoptes cruttwellae is a microscopic plant-feeding mite belonging to the family Eriophyidae and the order Trombidiformes. These mites are characterized by having only two pairs of legs, which is a distinctive feature of the family, and they are obligate parasites that are highly specialized to their host plant species.
The primary host for this mite is Lantana camara and related species. Because of its specific feeding habits, it has been studied extensively as a biological control agent. In many regions, this mite is utilized to reduce the vigor and spread of invasive lantana, helping to restore ecological balance in affected areas.
The biology of the mite is closely synchronized with the growth cycle of its host. The life stages include the egg, two nymphal instars, and the adult phase.
