Description

The Raspberry leaf and bud mite (Phyllocoptes gracilis) is a member of the Eriophyidae family within the Acariformes order. As a microscopic arachnid, it is a significant pest that specifically targets cultivated and wild raspberry and blackberry plants, often causing substantial losses in berry production.

This mite species feeds exclusively on the foliage and young shoots of its host plants. By puncturing the epidermis, it extracts vital plant fluids, causing systemic stress to the shrub. The mite's presence is often overlooked until significant visual damage appears on the leaves, making early identification critical for management.

Regarding its biological cycle, the mite overwinters as fertilized females sheltered deep within the bud scales or in bark crevices. Once spring temperatures rise, the mites become active, migrating to the newly unfurling leaves to commence feeding and reproduction. Several overlapping generations occur throughout the summer, facilitated by warm and humid conditions.

The characteristic injury manifests as chlorotic spots and small, raised swellings or galls on the leaf surface. As the infestation progresses, these symptoms lead to leaf crinkling, stunted growth, and tissue necrosis. Severe damage severely hinders the plant's ability to produce energy, ultimately reducing fruit quality and the total yield of the plantation.

Management requires a strategic approach. Key practices include:

  • Removal and destruction of infested plant material during the dormant season;
  • Maintaining healthy soil and moisture levels to improve plant resilience;
  • Application of specialized acaricides when mites migrate to new growth in early spring;
  • Introducing predatory mites as a biological control method in organic or integrated pest management systems.
