Granite rust mite

The Granite rust mite (Phyllocoptes graniti) is a microscopic pest classified within the family Eriophyidae and the order Trombidiformes. Like other members of this family, it is characterized by its vermiform body shape and tiny size, making it a challenging pest to detect without specialized equipment or careful observation of symptom patterns.

This mite species primarily affects stone fruit trees, particularly various species of the Prunus genus. They are specialized feeders that inhabit the surface of leaves and shoots, utilizing their piercing-sucking mouthparts to extract cellular sap, which disrupts the physiological integrity of the plant tissues at the site of feeding.

The biological cycle of the mite is synchronized with the phenology of its host plant. Overwintering occurs as fertilized females residing in protected niches such as bud scales or bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, the mites migrate to young, emerging foliage, where they begin feeding and initiating a rapid sequence of generations throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by Phyllocoptes graniti manifests as characteristic leaf deformation, gall formation, or chlorotic spotting. These physiological disturbances interfere with the photosynthetic process, leading to stunted leaf growth and overall tree stress. In severe infestations, the cumulative damage leads to significant yield reduction and increased susceptibility of the tree to other biotic and abiotic stressors.
