The poplar leaf gall mite (Phyllocoptes populi) is a member of the Eriophyidae family, commonly known as four-legged mites. These microscopic pests are specialized parasites that inhabit poplar trees, causing specific physiological changes in leaf tissue that result in the formation of galls.
This mite affects various species of the Populus genus. Its primary host is the poplar tree, where it finds optimal conditions for feeding and reproduction. The mite uses its piercing-sucking mouthparts to damage plant cells, which triggers the tree to create defensive tissue structures that enclose the mites.
The biological cycle is highly dependent on the tree's growth stages. The mites overwinter as fertilized females in bark crevices or dormant buds. In early spring, as buds begin to open, the mites migrate to the new emerging leaves. They feed on the leaf surface, inducing the formation of characteristic galls where the subsequent generations will develop throughout the growing season.
