Description
The plum gall mite (Phyllocoptes pruni) is a minute pest belonging to the Eriophyidae family of mites. These organisms are invisible to the naked eye and thrive by feeding on the sap and cellular contents of the foliage of specific fruit-bearing trees.
The primary hosts for this mite include various species of Prunus, such as plums, damsons, and blackthorns. While usually not fatal to the tree, chronic infestations can significantly weaken the plant, leading to poor growth and reduced fruit quality over multiple years.
The life cycle begins with fertilized females overwintering in the protective scales of dormant buds. As soon as temperatures rise and buds begin to swell in spring, the mites emerge and move to the developing leaves to feed and reproduce, completing several life cycles during a single growing season.
Damage is characterized by the formation of numerous galls on the upper leaf surface. These small bumps can vary in color and density. Severe infestations cause leaf curling, twisting, and necrosis, which hinders the tree's photosynthetic capability and contributes to premature defoliation in late summer.
Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this mite. Strategies include:
- Dormant season pruning of heavily infested branches to reduce the overwintering population.
- Application of sulfur-based or specific acaricide sprays at the onset of bud burst.
