Phyllocoptes salmaliae is a microscopic pest classified within the family Eriophyidae (the four-legged mites), belonging to the order Trombidiformes. This organism is highly specialized and is primarily known to infest plants of the Rosaceae family, specifically targeting various species of wild roses and rose hips.
The biological cycle of this mite is closely linked to the budding and vegetative growth of the host plant. Overwintering occurs in the adult stage, with mites hiding in dormant buds or crevices of the bark. Once temperatures rise in spring, the mites emerge to feed on developing leaf tissues, stimulating the plant to produce galls.
