Description

The citrus rust mite (Phyllocoptruta oleivora) belongs to the Eriophyidae family, order Trombidiformes. It is a microscopic pest that primarily targets citrus trees, causing significant economic damage to both the quantity and quality of the fruit produced in commercial orchards.

The biological cycle of the citrus rust mite is rapid, particularly under conditions of high temperature and high relative humidity. The mite passes through several stages—egg, larva, nymph, and adult—with a generation cycle that can be completed in as little as 7 to 14 days, leading to multiple generations in a single season.

The characteristic damage occurs when the mites feed on the epidermal cells of the fruit. This feeding process results in the destruction of oil glands and skin tissues, which turns the peel of the fruit a brownish, russeted color. These damaged fruits often lose moisture, stop growing, and may drop from the tree prematurely.

The economic impact of this pest is profound, as it directly affects the marketability of the crop. Even if the internal quality of the fruit remains intact, the external russeting significantly lowers the grade of the citrus, making it unsuitable for the fresh market and forcing growers to direct produce to processing channels at lower prices.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and intervention strategies:

  • Implement regular scouting programs using hand lenses to monitor mite population density.
  • Apply synthetic acaricides or horticultural oils when the population exceeds economic thresholds.
  • Improve canopy aeration through proper pruning to lower micro-climate humidity levels.
  • Promote the presence of natural predators, such as predatory mites, to provide biological control within the orchard ecosystem.
