Description
Systematic position: The crucifer flea beetle Phyllotreta consobrina belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Chrysomelidae. As a member of the flea beetle group, it is characterized by its jumping ability and small size, making it a persistent and difficult-to-manage pest in cruciferous cropping systems worldwide.
Affected crops: This pest primarily targets members of the Brassicaceae family. It causes significant economic damage to various types of cabbage, radish, mustard, swede, and is particularly destructive to oilseed rape (canola). It can also survive on wild cruciferous weeds, which serve as alternative food sources.
Biology and life cycle: Adult beetles overwinter in the soil or under plant debris. Once spring temperatures rise above 10–12°C, they emerge to feed on developing seedlings. The females deposit eggs in the soil near the host plants. Larvae emerge and feed on the roots or underground stems, later pupating within the soil before emerging as the next generation of adults.
Damage patterns and economic impact: The primary damage is caused by adults grazing on the leaves, creating small, distinct holes known as shotholing. In severe infestations, the entire leaf surface can be skeletonized, causing young seedlings to wither and die. This leads to poor plant establishment and significant yield losses in commercial fields.
Control measures: Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, field hygiene, and weed control are essential to reduce local populations. Seed treatments with systemic insecticides are highly effective for protecting crops during the early seedling stage. Additionally, prophylactic chemical spraying may be necessary if threshold levels are exceeded during rapid beetle emergence.
