Spruce phylloxera

Spruce phylloxera (Phylloxera conifera) is a small insect pest classified within the family Phylloxeridae and the order Hemiptera. These insects are specialized feeders that thrive on various species of spruce, posing a significant challenge to forest nurseries, landscaping projects, and ornamental tree collections.

The primary host plants for this pest are members of the Picea genus. The insects primarily infest the needles and tender young shoots. By piercing the plant tissues and extracting cell sap, they deprive the tree of vital nutrients, which is particularly detrimental to young, rapidly growing specimens found in nurseries.

The biology and lifecycle of Phylloxera conifera are characterized by distinct developmental stages. The pest overwinters as eggs, usually tucked into crevices in the bark or near bud scales. As spring temperatures rise, the nymphs emerge and begin feeding, initiating a cycle that can involve several overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

The damage caused by spruce phylloxera is typically manifested by needle discoloration, twisting or deformation, and subsequent needle drop. Chronic infestation severely weakens the tree, leading to stunted shoot growth and reduced vigor.
