Hickory leaf phylloxera (Phylloxera depressa) is a small aphid-like insect belonging to the family Phylloxeridae within the order Hemiptera. This pest is specifically known for inducing the development of galls on the foliage of its host plants, affecting their overall physiological performance.
The primary hosts for this species are members of the Carya genus, commonly known as hickory trees. While typically found in North American native forests, it can impact orchard plantings where these specific host trees are cultivated for timber or nut production.
The life cycle of the pest involves several stages that are highly synchronized with the tree's phenology. Overwintering occurs in bark crevices, followed by a spring migration to budding leaves.
