Description
Systematic position: This pest belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. It is widely recognized as one of the most destructive agricultural pests affecting viticulture globally, necessitating stringent quarantine protocols in most grape-producing regions.
Host plants: The primary hosts are Vitis species. While North American grape species have evolved defense mechanisms, the European grapevine (Vitis vinifera) is extremely susceptible, particularly to the root-feeding form of the insect, which can lead to complete vineyard collapse.
Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle is exceptionally complex, involving root-dwelling and leaf-dwelling forms. The insect reproduces through parthenogenesis, allowing for a rapid increase in population density. It can overwinter as nymphs on the roots, which makes it particularly difficult to detect and eradicate once established in a vineyard.
Damage and economic impact: The root-feeding form creates galls and necrotic lesions on the roots, disrupting the vine's ability to absorb water and nutrients. Secondary infections often invade these wounds, leading to root rot and premature death of the vines. Leaf-galling forms can also cause foliage damage, though the root-form damage is the primary cause of economic loss.
Control measures: Integrated pest management is essential. Key strategies include:

- Strict enforcement of quarantine and phytosanitary regulations.
- Regular monitoring and soil analysis in high-risk areas.
