Systematic position: The smooth phylloxera (Phylloxera glabra) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. This insect is a specialized obligate parasite that maintains a close evolutionary relationship with host plants belonging to the Vitis genus, causing significant pathological alterations in plant tissues.
Host plants: This species is highly host-specific, primarily infesting the foliage of grapevines (Vitis vinifera and certain American Vitis species). Unlike the more widely known root-feeding phylloxera, Phylloxera glabra focuses its life cycle on the leaves, where it induces the formation of galls.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves development directly on the vine leaves. Adult females deposit eggs on the abaxial (underside) surface of the leaf.
