Globose Phylloxera

Systematic position: The Globose Phylloxera (Phylloxera globosa) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. It is a highly specialized sap-sucking insect known for inducing the formation of plant galls, which serve as both its habitat and food source.

Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the hazelnut tree (genus Corylus). While other species of phylloxera target grapes, Phylloxera globosa is adapted specifically to the physiological conditions of hazelnut foliage, making it a niche pest in nut orchards.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle involves complex alternation of generations. Eggs overwinter in bark crevices. Upon hatching in spring, the founder nymphs migrate to young leaves. Through their feeding activity, they induce the plant to grow distinctive spherical galls. Within these galls, the insects mature and multiply, eventually producing winged forms that disperse to new leaves or trees.

Damage and harmfulness: The presence of the pest is marked by the development of spherical galls on the underside of leaves. These galls divert nutrients from the plant's metabolic processes. Heavy infestations result in deformed, chlorotic leaves, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity, premature leaf drop, and overall physiological stress to the hazelnut bush.
