Oak phylloxera

Oak phylloxera (Latin: Phylloxera ilicis) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. This small phloem-feeding insect predominantly infests various oak species (Quercus), with a particular preference for evergreen varieties such as the holm oak, where it causes characteristic physiological damage.

The biology and lifecycle of Phylloxera ilicis are closely synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. The pests overwinter in bark crevices or similar sheltered areas. With the onset of spring, the nymphs emerge and begin feeding on young, developing foliage, which triggers the formation of galls that serve as both a protective habitat and a nutrient source for the developing insects.

The primary symptom of an infestation is the presence of numerous small galls on the undersides of leaves. These structures are caused by the injection of salivary substances during feeding. As the population density increases, the cumulative effect of feeding leads to leaf curling, chlorosis, and in severe cases, premature senescence and loss of foliage, hindering the tree's photosynthetic capacity.

The economic and ecological impact of this pest is significant, particularly in nurseries, forest plantations, and urban landscapes. Infested trees often suffer from reduced growth rates, lack of vigor, and increased susceptibility to secondary stressors, such as drought or pathogenic fungi, which can ultimately threaten the longevity of the affected oak stands.

Management strategies require a multi-faceted approach to reduce pest populations effectively. Recommended control measures include:

• sanitation practices, such as the removal and destruction of fallen leaves in autumn;
• application of appropriate systemic insecticides during the critical nymph emergence window in spring;
• promoting tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation to enhance natural defenses;
• encouraging the presence of beneficial predatory insects that naturally suppress phylloxera populations.
