Description

Systematic position. The intermediate grape phylloxera (Phylloxera intermedia) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. It is a specialized pest that is closely related to the notorious Daktulosphaira vitifoliae. This insect is of significant economic concern for global viticulture, as it disrupts the physiological processes of the host plants through its feeding habits.

Host plants. The primary hosts for Phylloxera intermedia are species within the Vitis genus. While cultural varieties are the primary targets, the pest can also inhabit wild grape species. Depending on the biotype, the insect can target both the root systems (root-dwelling form) and the aerial portions, specifically the leaves (leaf-dwelling form), causing severe physiological stress to the vine.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is complex, characterized by rapid reproduction and various life stages including eggs, nymphs, and adults. The pest exhibits a high capacity for population growth during favorable warm conditions. Its ability to switch between feeding on roots and foliage allows it to persist in vineyards even under varying environmental conditions, making eradication extremely difficult once established.

Damage and severity. The damage caused by Phylloxera intermedia is largely due to the formation of galls on leaves or root swellings known as nodosities. These injuries interfere with the vine's ability to transport water and nutrients. Over time, the root system decays due to secondary infections that enter through the feeding wounds, leading to vine decline, reduced fruit quality, and eventual death of the grape plant.
