Italian phylloxera

Systematic position: Italian phylloxera (Phylloxera italica) is an insect belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. It is a specialized pest that maintains a close symbiotic and parasitic relationship with grapevine hosts. Due to its size and subterranean lifestyle, it often goes undetected until significant damage to the plant has already occurred.

Host crops: The primary host for this pest is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The insect specifically targets the root system of the plants. By colonizing the roots, the pest causes structural damage that inhibits the normal physiological functions of the grapevine, leading to poor vigor and stunted growth throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves multiple nymphal stages and an adult form, all adapted for life in the soil environment. These insects feed by piercing the plant tissue and extracting nutrients. Reproduction rates are highly influenced by soil moisture and temperature, allowing the population to expand during favorable spring and summer conditions.

Nature of damage and harm: The pest causes the formation of distinct galls and nodules on the roots. These growths block the transport of water and essential minerals within the vine. As the infestation progresses, these root galls become susceptible to fungal infections and rot, which accelerates the decline of the grapevine and ultimately leads to the death of the plant.

Protection measures: Managing Italian phylloxera requires a long-term preventive strategy rather than purely reactive measures. Essential management practices include:
