Lesser phylloxera (Phylloxera minima) is a specialized plant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. This species is recognized as a harmful insect affecting primarily grapevines and requires strict phytosanitary management to prevent spreading in agricultural areas.

The pest targets various species of grapevines (Vitis). Unlike more aggressive related species, Phylloxera minima is frequently found on the leaf surfaces, causing specific structural changes in plant tissues. The weakening of the vine due to sap extraction leads to a significant decrease in the plant's overall health and vigor.

The biology of this species is closely linked to the developmental cycle of its host plant. The pest undergoes several life stages, including eggs, nymphs, and adults. Reproduction occurs through both sexual and parthenogenetic pathways, allowing the population to recover rapidly even after exposure to unfavorable environmental conditions.

Where the insect punctures the leaf tissue with its stylet, the plant responds with abnormal tissue growth, creating protective tumor-like structures where the pest resides.
