Grape phylloxera

Grape phylloxera (Phylloxera pilosula) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Phylloxeridae. It is a microscopic aphid-like insect that represents one of the most significant threats to viticulture worldwide, acting as a major quarantine pest that can devastate entire vineyard plantations if not properly managed.

The primary host for this pest is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera) and its various interspecific hybrids. While some American grapevine species possess natural resistance, European cultivars are highly susceptible to root damage, which makes them particularly vulnerable to rapid population growth and subsequent plant decline.

The life cycle of the insect is notably complex, involving several stages that occur on both roots and leaves. The root-dwelling form is the most damaging, as it continuously feeds on the grapevine roots. This feeding triggers the development of abnormal growths known as nodosities and tuberosities, which compromise the plant's ability to transport water and nutrients.

Symptoms of infestation include stunted shoot growth, leaf yellowing, and general lack of vigor. As the root system becomes riddled with lesions caused by the insect, secondary soil-borne pathogens often invade the tissue, leading to root rot and the eventual death of the vine, which typically occurs several years after the initial colonization.

Effective protection strategies focus on the use of phylloxera-resistant rootstocks, which is currently the most successful method for maintaining vineyard health in infested areas. Additionally, quarantine protocols, soil fumigation in localized spots, and planting in deep sandy soils—where the insect struggles to thrive—are essential practices for long-term vineyard survival.
