Maak's Longhorn Beetle

Systematic position: Maak's Longhorn Beetle (Phymatodes maaki) is a member of the Cerambycidae family within the Coleoptera order. It is recognized as a significant wood-boring pest that specializes in invading the tissues of various hardwood tree species, often causing extensive internal structural damage to host plants.

Host plants: This beetle predominantly targets deciduous trees. Common hosts include maple, linden, and birch trees. In urban and forest environments, the presence of this pest is often associated with stressed or weakened trees, although under optimal conditions, it can spread to healthier specimens, impacting the vitality of both ornamental and forest plantations.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of Phymatodes maaki typically spans one to two years, depending on environmental temperature and humidity. Adult beetles emerge during the summer season to mate. Females deposit their eggs into crevices in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately tunnel into the cambium and xylem, where they feed throughout their developmental stages before pupating.

Character of damage: The primary injury is caused by the larvae, which create extensive galleries beneath the bark. This tunneling disrupts the tree's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients. Visible symptoms include frass (boring dust) accumulating on the bark surface, exit holes, and signs of canopy dieback. Severe infestations often lead to the premature death of the tree.

Protection measures: Management strategies focus on sanitation and preventive care. Key actions include:
