Description

Phytoecia rufiventris is a species of longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae) known as a significant pest of sunflowers. These beetles are predominantly found in regions where sunflower crops are cultivated extensively, causing substantial losses in agricultural production.

The host plants for this pest include cultivated sunflowers and various wild species of the Asteraceae family. Wild host plants serve as an important reservoir for the population, allowing the beetle to survive and migrate to agricultural areas during the spring season when the crop begins its active growth phase.

The life cycle involves the adult beetles appearing in late spring. Females lay their eggs in the lower parts of the sunflower stems. The larvae develop inside the stems, feeding on the pith and internal tissues. This larval stage lasts for several months, during which the insect completes its development before pupating within the stem.

The damage caused by the larvae is severe. By destroying the pith, they weaken the structural integrity of the sunflower stem, making the plants prone to lodging, especially during windy conditions. Furthermore, nutrient flow to the flower head is significantly disrupted, resulting in smaller seeds and reduced overall oil yield.

  • performing deep autumn plowing to eliminate overwintering larvae in crop residues;
  • maintaining field edges free of host weeds to reduce initial infestation;
