Systematic position: The Maple gall mite (Phytoptus aceris) is a microscopic arthropod belonging to the order Trombidiformes and the family Eriophyidae. These specialized mites are known for inducing abnormal plant growth, specifically in the form of galls on foliage.
Affected crops: This pest is primarily associated with maples (Acer species), including Norway maple. It is frequently encountered in nurseries, public parks, and urban landscapes, where it targets both wild species and ornamental cultivars.
Biology and life cycle: The mites overwinter as adults, finding shelter beneath the bud scales of the host tree. As spring begins and buds start to swell, the mites move onto the developing leaves. They secrete salivary fluids that manipulate the plant's cells, inducing the growth of galls, which provide a protected environment for feeding and reproduction.
Damage and severity: The presence of the mite is characterized by the formation of numerous tiny, cone-shaped or hair-like galls on the upper leaf surface. While these galls are often yellow or red, they can be unsightly. Heavy infestations can result in leaf discoloration, premature leaf drop, and overall physiological stress, which can weaken the tree over time.
Control measures: Effective management typically involves the application of horticultural oils or acaricides in early spring, specifically targeting the mites as they emerge from their overwintering sites.
