The genus Picoides belongs to the family Picidae within the order Piciformes. While often viewed as beneficial forest inhabitants, these birds can become significant pests in orchards and agricultural plantations, especially when they focus their foraging efforts on cultivated fruit or nut trees.

Crops most frequently damaged include apple, pear, cherry, and walnut trees. Woodpeckers are often attracted to trees infested with wood-boring insects, but in the process of extracting larvae, they frequently cause extensive physical damage to the healthy bark and underlying cambium layer of the host tree.

The biology of these birds is characterized by high, year-round activity. They possess specialized morphological adaptations for pecking at hard surfaces. During the autumn and winter months, when traditional food sources are scarce, their behavior in orchards becomes more aggressive, leading to increased damage to tree trunks and main branches.

The severity of the damage is significant, as the deep cavities created by the birds disrupt the vascular tissue (phloem and xylem) of the tree. These wounds serve as entry points for pathogens, fungi, and bacterial infections, which can lead to rapid decay, reduced fruit quality, and the eventual death of the affected tree limb.

Effective management strategies focus on integrated pest control and deterrents. Visual repellents such as reflective tape, holographic deterrents, and predator decoys are commonly used. Additionally, wrapping tree trunks with wire mesh or specialized netting during periods of high activity provides a physical barrier that prevents birds from accessing the bark surface.
