Description

Systematic position: Pissodes engelmanni belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a significant forest pest notorious for attacking the terminal leaders of spruce trees, often causing severe growth deformities in young forest stands and nursery plantations.

Host plants: This weevil species primarily infests various spruce species (Picea), with a strong preference for Engelmann spruce and white spruce. While it focuses on young trees, it can cause cumulative damage to stands over several years, significantly impacting forest productivity and timber quality.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves adult weevils overwintering in the duff or bark scales. In the spring, they migrate to the terminal shoots to feed and mate. Females lay eggs in the current year's leader. The larvae feed underneath the bark, mining the cambium layer, which effectively girdles the shoot and cuts off nutrient transport.

Damage and severity: The most characteristic symptom is the wilting and drooping of the terminal leader, commonly described as a "shepherd's crook" shape. Because the terminal leader is killed, one or more lateral branches will assume vertical growth, resulting in permanent crooks or forks in the main stem, which drastically reduces the future lumber value of the tree.

Management and control: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies include the sanitation pruning of infested leaders before adult weevils emerge, usually in early summer. Chemical control involves targeted applications of insecticides during the spring adult emergence period. Furthermore, encouraging the growth of mixed-species stands can reduce the susceptibility of spruce monocultures to massive infestations.
