Description
Systematic position. The oak longhorn beetle (Plagionotus detritus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Cerambycidae. This species is a well-known wood-boring insect that occupies a specific niche in forest ecosystems, primarily interacting with various hardwood tree species.
Host plants. The primary host for this beetle is the oak tree (Quercus). While it shows a strong preference for oaks, it can also infest other deciduous trees like beech, hornbeam, and chestnut. It typically selects trees that are already physiologically stressed or recently felled for its breeding sites.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Plagionotus detritus usually spans two years. Adult beetles are active during the summer months, often seen on the sunny side of tree trunks. After mating, females deposit eggs into crevices in the bark. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding just beneath the bark before moving deeper into the sapwood to construct galleries.

This boring activity interrupts the tree's vascular system, hindering the transport of water and nutrients.
