Plagiotrochus

Plagiotrochus is a genus of gall wasps belonging to the family Cynipidae, within the order Hymenoptera. These insects are specialized phytophages known for inducing the formation of galls on their host plants. In forestry and ornamental arboriculture, they are recognized as pests due to their ability to damage the structural integrity and growth of oak trees.

The primary hosts for Plagiotrochus species are trees of the genus Quercus (oaks). These wasps typically target young shoots, buds, or leaves to lay their eggs. Through the injection of specific secretions, the wasp induces the plant to produce a gall, which serves as a nutrient-rich and protective habitat for the developing larvae.

The life cycle of these insects often involves distinct generations, which may vary in their host preference or the type of galls they produce. Once the egg is laid, the larval stage begins, during which the larva feeds on the internal tissues of the gall. The gall structure is highly specialized, offering both chemical protection and nutritional support throughout the development phase.

Damage caused by Plagiotrochus manifests as distinctive swellings or growths on twigs and leaves. While light infestations may only cause cosmetic damage, heavy outbreaks can lead to stunted growth, distorted branching, and reduced photosynthetic capacity.
