Systematic position: The Pacific mealybug (Planococcus pacificus) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is a significant agricultural pest known for its white, wax-covered appearance and its capacity to colonize various host plants across tropical and subtropical environments.
Host crops: As a polyphagous insect, the Pacific mealybug attacks a wide range of plants. It is particularly damaging to citrus trees, grapes, and various ornamental greenhouse plants. Greenhouse environments, in particular, provide an ideal habitat for this pest to thrive year-round, posing a constant risk to indoor foliage and flowering crops.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of the Pacific mealybug includes the egg stage, several nymphal stages, and the adult stage. The crawlers are the primary means of dispersal within a crop. Once they find a suitable feeding site, they settle down and cover themselves with a protective waxy substance, which makes them highly resistant to many contact insecticides.
