Blue stag beetle

Systematic position. The blue stag beetle (Platycerus caprea) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Lucanidae. As a wood-boring insect, it is a significant component of woodland ecosystems, primarily interacting with decaying organic matter, though it is often classified as a pest in managed forests and nurseries.

Host plants and distribution. The species is typically found in deciduous and mixed forests across Europe. Its larvae thrive in the decaying wood of trees such as beech, oak, hornbeam, birch, alder, and occasionally fruit trees in orchards that are already stressed, diseased, or suffering from fungal rot.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is dependent on fungal-infected timber. Adult females deposit eggs into the crevices of bark or directly into decaying wood. The larvae develop within the wood, feeding on decomposing plant tissues. This larval stage is relatively long, and their continuous movement and feeding accelerate the breakdown of the wood structure.

Damage and economic impact. The primary economic impact occurs in forestry where the beetle contributes to the degradation of fallen timber or severely weakened trees. While the blue stag beetle rarely attacks healthy, vigorous trees, its presence is a clear indicator of underlying wood rot, which can lead to timber loss and structural instability in forest plantations.

Control measures. Management is focused on cultural practices and forest hygiene to reduce potential breeding sites for the pest. Effective strategies include:

• regular sanitary thinning and removal of dead or dying trees;
• proper disposal of logging residues, fallen branches, and stumps;
• maintaining overall forest health to prevent tree susceptibility;
• minimizing physical damage to the bark to prevent entry points for rot-inducing fungi.
