Description
The Lesser stag beetle (Sinodendron cylindricum) belongs to the Lucanidae family within the order Coleoptera. While often regarded as part of the ecosystem's decomposer guild, it can act as a pest when it targets ornamental or commercial deciduous trees that are already under physiological stress.
The pest primarily infests deciduous tree species such as beech, oak, ash, birch, and willow. It is particularly attracted to trees with compromised bark or decaying heartwood. While it prefers deadwood, high populations can bridge the gap between dead and living tissue, causing significant structural damage.
The biology of Sinodendron cylindricum involves a prolonged larval stage lasting several years. Females deposit eggs in crevices, after which the larvae feed internally on the woody tissue. This life cycle is highly dependent on humidity levels and the decay state of the host wood, making the pest thrive in damp, undisturbed areas.
Damage is characterized by dense networks of larval galleries filled with frass, which weaken the mechanical stability of the trunk. The resulting damage reduces the timber quality and provides entry points for wood-decay fungi, significantly increasing the risk of tree failure and overall decline of the specimen.
Effective management strategies focus on integrated forest and garden hygiene. This includes the removal of heavily infested timber, clearing away deadwood that hosts breeding populations, and promoting vigorous tree growth. Maintaining tree health through proper irrigation and soil management is essential to prevent successful colonization by the beetle.
