The Lesser stag beetle (Platycerus caraboides) is a member of the family Lucanidae, order Coleoptera. Distinguished by its metallic blue or green coloration and smaller stature compared to the common stag beetle, this insect is occasionally considered a pest in orchard environments due to its feeding habits on both wood and fresh plant tissue.
This species primarily targets deciduous fruit trees, including cherries, plums, apples, and pears. Its presence is most frequently observed in older, poorly maintained orchards where decaying wood, stumps, and fallen branches provide the necessary substrate for larval development and colonization.
The biological life cycle of the Lesser stag beetle is closely tied to decaying organic matter. Larvae develop within wood, feeding on decaying tissues for several years.
