Tufted apple bud moth

Systematic position of this insect belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Tortricidae. Known commonly as the tufted apple bud moth, it is a significant pest primarily in North American apple orchards, where its larvae are capable of causing widespread economic damage if not properly monitored and controlled.

Host crops are diverse, including a wide range of fruit-bearing trees such as apples, pears, peaches, and cherries. The larvae are generalist feeders and can also develop on various broad-leaved trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants. This polyphagous nature allows the moth to persist in agricultural environments throughout the growing season.

Biology and life cycle typically involve two to three generations per year, depending on the climatic conditions. The species overwinters as late-instar larvae in protected areas such as bark crevices or leaf litter. After emerging in the spring, the larvae feed on buds and leaves before pupating, leading to successive waves of adult activity throughout the summer months.

Nature of damage and economic importance are primarily associated with the larvae feeding on fruit. They create shallow, irregular, and often sunken patches on the surface of the fruit skin, which are frequently located near the stem or where leaves touch the apple. This damage not only ruins the appearance of the fruit but also creates entry points for secondary pathogens and rots.

Management and control measures require an integrated approach (IPM). Key strategies include:

• Regular monitoring using pheromone traps to identify the timing of adult emergence.
• Timing insecticide applications specifically to target young larvae before they begin feeding inside protected areas.
• Maintaining good sanitation by removing infested fruit and debris.
• Utilizing biological control agents and mating disruption techniques where applicable to reduce the overall population pressure in the orchard.
