Platyphytoptus is a genus of microscopic mites belonging to the Eriophyidae family and the Trombidiformes order. These four-legged mites are specialized pests that primarily target coniferous trees, causing significant concern in forestry and ornamental landscape maintenance.
The primary hosts for these mites are various species of pine (Pinus spp.). Because these mites are extremely small, they often go unnoticed until visible damage appears on the needles, making them a challenging pest for foresters and nursery managers to control effectively.
The biology of the mite is characterized by an overwintering stage where adult females reside under bud scales or bark crevices. As temperatures rise in spring, the mites emerge to infest new needle growth.
