Sabin pine mite

Systematic position: Platyphytoptus sabinianae is a species within the Eriophyidae family, belonging to the Trombidiformes order. These mites are known as eriophyid or gall mites, characterized by their vermiform bodies and having only two pairs of legs, which distinguishes them from other mite species.

Host plants: The primary host for this pest is the Sabin pine (Pinus sabiniana). While it shows a high degree of host specificity, the mite can occasionally be found on other related pine species in habitats where host ranges overlap or in horticultural settings where diverse conifer species are planted together.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves several stages, including egg, nymph, and adult. The mites overwinter as adult females under bark scales or in protected areas of the pine buds. With the arrival of warmer temperatures, they move to the developing needles to feed, completing several generations throughout the growing season.

Nature of damage and pest status: The damage is caused by the mite sucking the sap from needle tissues. This feeding process triggers physiological changes in the tree, leading to needle discoloration, chlorosis, and sometimes severe needle drop. Heavy infestations can significantly stunt growth, particularly in younger trees, and lead to poor crown health.
