Pleonomus

Pleonomus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Elateridae, commonly known as click beetles. These insects are significant agricultural pests in many regions, particularly in Asia. Their larvae, often referred to as wireworms, are among the most destructive soil-dwelling pests affecting field and vegetable crops worldwide.

Systematically, the genus is classified under the order Coleoptera. While the adult beetles are generally harmless to crops, their presence indicates potential future infestations. The larvae are characterized by their hard, yellowish or brownish cylindrical bodies, which allow them to move easily through soil and penetrate tough plant tissues.

Pleonomus larvae feed on a wide variety of crops, including cereals (wheat, barley, rice), maize, potatoes, and sugar beets. They cause damage by consuming seeds before germination, severing seedling roots, and boring into the stems of established plants. This activity causes patchy stands, stunted plant growth, and significant yield losses in affected fields.

The biology of Pleonomus is defined by a multi-year life cycle, with the larval stage lasting several years. During this time, they exhibit high adaptability to changing environmental conditions by moving through different soil profiles. This behavioral flexibility makes it difficult to predict their exact location and timing of peak damage without specialized soil sampling.
