Indian meal moth

Taxonomic status: The Indian meal moth (Plodia interpunctella) is a member of the order Lepidoptera, family Pyralidae. It is recognized as one of the most significant pests of stored products globally, frequently infesting warehouses, food processing facilities, and residential kitchens.

Host range: This species is a generalist feeder with a wide host range. Larvae feed on a variety of dried food items, including cereal grains, flour, rice, nuts, dried fruits, chocolate, seeds, and even pet food. Their ability to thrive on diverse substrates makes them difficult to eliminate once an infestation is established.

Biology and lifecycle: The insect undergoes complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs directly on food sources. The developmental time is highly dependent on environmental conditions, typically ranging from 30 to 45 days in optimal warmth. Multiple generations can be produced annually in climate-controlled environments.

Damage and economic importance: The larval stage is responsible for the damage. Larvae consume the food, often leaving behind fine webbing, silk trails, and frass (waste). This webbing causes particles of grain or flour to clump together, severely degrading product quality and rendering it unfit for human or animal consumption due to contamination.

Infested products should be removed and destroyed immediately. In professional settings, structural fumigation or the use of insect growth regulators is employed to disrupt the life cycle of the moth.
