Description
The Chinese planthopper (Pochazia chinensis) is an invasive insect species belonging to the family Ricaniidae (order Hemiptera). Originating from Eastern Asia, this pest has successfully established itself in several new territories, where it poses a significant threat to viticulture and diverse orchard crops.
This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a vast array of plant species. The primary hosts include grapevines (Vitis vinifera), citrus trees, pome fruits like apple and pear, as well as various ornamental shrubs and deciduous trees, often causing severe economic losses.
Regarding its biology, Pochazia chinensis typically undergoes one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs embedded within the plant tissue or under the bark of twigs. Nymphs emerge in spring, characterized by a white waxy secretion, and proceed to feed on the sap of stems and leaves.
Damage is twofold: direct injury occurs through sap-sucking, which weakens the plant and induces yellowing or wilting of foliage. Indirect damage is caused by the production of honeydew, which serves as a substrate for sooty mold fungi that inhibit photosynthesis and degrade the aesthetic and commercial quality of produce.
Management strategies for this pest rely on a combined approach. Preventive measures include the removal and destruction of infested plant parts during the winter dormancy. Chemical control involves the application of systemic insecticides targeting the nymphal stages, while biological control research, focused on egg parasitoids, is currently ongoing to provide sustainable long-term solutions.
