Chinese flatid planthopper

Systematic position. The Chinese flatid planthopper (Pochazia shantungensis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Flatidae. It is a highly polyphagous and invasive insect species originating from East Asia. Due to its rapid reproduction and high mobility, it has become an increasingly significant pest in agricultural and ornamental settings worldwide.

Host plants. This pest exhibits a broad host range, feeding on hundreds of different plant species. Economically important plants targeted by the insect include various fruit trees, grapevines, persimmon, citrus, and numerous ornamental plants found in nurseries, urban parks, and forests.

Biology and life cycle. Pochazia shantungensis typically completes one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, which are laid under the bark of young twigs. Nymphs hatch in the spring and go through five instars, feeding on plant sap. Adults emerge in mid-to-late summer, characterized by their distinct wings and jumping ability, and they remain active until the autumn frost.

Nature of damage. Damage is caused by both nymphs and adults piercing plant tissues and extracting sap. This feeding activity causes stunted growth, wilting, and reduced yields. A major secondary effect is the production of honeydew, which promotes the growth of sooty mold, blocking light from reaching the leaves and significantly reducing the overall quality of agricultural products.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this species. Effective management strategies include:

• Regular field scouting to identify infestation hotspots early.
• Pruning and destroying infested branches containing egg masses during the dormant season.
• Applying insecticides targeting the early nymphal stages when they are most vulnerable.
• Deploying sticky traps and pheromone-based monitoring to track population density.
