Ricania hedenborgi is a harmful insect belonging to the family Ricaniidae (order Hemiptera). This species has become a significant concern in various agricultural regions due to its ability to colonize a wide range of host plants, including fruit trees, grapevines, and various ornamental species, often causing severe economic losses.

The insect possesses a broad host range, making it a highly adaptable polyphagous pest. It primarily targets perennial woody plants and vegetable crops. Because it thrives in Mediterranean and temperate climates, its migration or introduction into new regions poses a constant threat to local nurseries and large-scale plantations alike.

The life cycle begins with eggs laid inside the plant tissues, typically under the bark of young shoots, which allows the species to survive the winter. Following the hatching of nymphs, the insect goes through several developmental stages. Both nymphs and adults are active feeders, using their specialized mouthparts to pierce the plant surface and extract essential sap from the phloem.

Feeding damage is characterized by wilting, stunted growth, and yellowing of the foliage. Moreover, Ricania hedenborgi secretes large amounts of honeydew. This sticky substance promotes the growth of sooty mold, which covers the leaf surfaces, blocks photosynthesis, and severely degrades the aesthetic and nutritional quality of the fruit or leaves.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as removing and destroying infested stems to eliminate egg clusters, are the first line of defense. Chemical control using systemic insecticides is often necessary during peak nymph emergence. It is crucial to calibrate treatments to protect beneficial insects while effectively reducing the pest population before they reach the adult flying stage.
