The genus Pococera belongs to the family Pyralidae within the order Lepidoptera. These moth species are known for their larvae that lead a concealed lifestyle, often constructing intricate silk nests on their host plants. Taxonomically, these insects are specialized phytophagous pests adapted to feeding on various parts of woody and herbaceous vegetation.

Key crops damaged by members of this genus include nut-bearing trees, particularly the pecan tree, as well as various ornamental deciduous trees and shrubs. The Pococera larvae are capable of consuming leaves, buds, and young shoots, which significantly reduces the vegetative vigor and overall productivity of the plant during the growing season.

The biology of the pest follows a typical lepidopteran life cycle consisting of egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. Adult moths are generally active during twilight hours, depositing eggs on leaf surfaces or in tree branch crotches. The developing larvae live in colonies, weaving silk webs that provide protection from predators and harsh environmental conditions while they feed on the plant tissues.

Damage symptoms include leaf skeletonization or complete defoliation within the silk nests. The presence of webbing and frass (insect excrement) on branches serves as the primary visual indicator of an infestation. Massive outbreaks lead to significant defoliation, tree stress, premature fruit drop, and increased susceptibility to secondary infections and opportunistic pathogens.

Control measures require an integrated pest management approach:

• Use of contact and systemic insecticides during high population pressure.
