Nepal shield bug

Systematic position: The Nepal shield bug (Poecilocoris nepalensis) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Scutelleridae. Known for its distinct appearance, this species is recognized as a significant agricultural pest that thrives in diverse ecological zones, particularly in regions with abundant woody vegetation.

Host plants: This pest primarily targets fruit-bearing trees and ornamental shrubs. It is known to inhabit various species within the Rosaceae family. In agricultural settings, it can cause economic damage to plantations by feeding on both the vegetative parts of the plants and the developing fruits, leading to direct losses for farmers.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The insect undergoes hemimetabolous development. Adults typically overwinter in sheltered areas, such as leaf litter, crevices in tree bark, or other protected locations. Once temperatures rise, they emerge to feed and begin the reproductive phase, often laying eggs in characteristic clusters.

Damage and harmfulness: As a sucking insect, Poecilocoris nepalensis utilizes its mouthparts to pierce the epidermis of fruits and soft shoots. The saliva injected during feeding often causes local necrosis, deformation of the fruit surface, and sometimes systemic wilting of shoots. Severe infestations can result in significant yield reductions and lower quality of the final horticultural product.

Protection measures: Management of this pest requires a combination of strategies to minimize chemical reliance:

• Regular monitoring of orchard edges where the pest often migrates from wild host plants.
