The host plants mainly consist of species within the Picea (spruce) genus. The beetle is commonly classified as a secondary pest, meaning it prefers to colonize trees that are already stressed by drought, wind damage, or root rot, though it can also thrive in fresh slash piles left after logging operations.

The life cycle involves the adult stage emerging during late spring or summer. After mating, females deposit eggs into the crevices of the bark. Larvae burrow beneath the surface, creating intricate galleries that disrupt the cambium and phloem layers. This larval stage is the most destructive phase, as it causes direct physiological damage to the host.
