The genus Pollenia, commonly known as cluster flies, belongs to the Calliphoridae family within the order Diptera. While primarily recognized as nuisance pests in residential buildings during autumn, their presence in agricultural and horticultural environments carries specific implications for crop health and sanitation.

These flies interact with various plant species, particularly during their adult stage when they visit flowers for nectar. However, their primary negative impact involves the contamination of crops. By moving between decaying organic matter and fresh plant tissues, they act as mechanical vectors for various phytopathogens, including bacteria and fungi that cause soft rot.

The biology of Pollenia is notably unique due to the larval stage's interaction with earthworms. They act as parasitoids, which can affect soil health by reducing earthworm populations. The development cycle consists of the egg, three larval instars, pupa, and the adult fly, with climate conditions heavily influencing the speed of generation turnover.

Damage assessment typically focuses on the spread of secondary infections. While the larvae do not feed on crops directly, the presence of large swarms of adults on fruits and vegetables during the harvest season reduces crop marketability and accelerates spoilage. Their constant activity on produce creates entry points for moisture and pathogens.
