Cluster fly

The cluster fly, scientifically known as Pollenia rudis, belongs to the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae. It is easily recognized by the presence of golden, hair-like bristles on its thorax and its characteristic sluggish flight, which produces a distinct buzzing sound when the insect is disturbed.

The life cycle of Pollenia rudis is uniquely dependent on earthworms. The female fly deposits eggs in the soil near the burrows of earthworms. Upon hatching, the larvae seek out the earthworms to feed on their tissues, eventually pupating in the soil. There are typically several generations of this fly per year depending on the climate.

While cluster flies do not directly consume crops or foliage, they act as parasites on earthworms. This interaction is detrimental to soil health, as earthworms are vital for improving soil structure, aeration, and fertility. A high population density of these flies in a local area can result in a significant reduction of the beneficial earthworm population.

The primary economic and household nuisance occurs during late autumn, when the flies seek protected areas to overwinter. They often aggregate in vast numbers within wall voids, attics, and window frames of houses. Their presence causes significant sanitary issues and requires ongoing maintenance and pest management efforts to exclude them from structures.

Effective management and control strategies for cluster flies focus on prevention and physical exclusion:

• Sealing all entry points, including cracks in siding, window frames, and doors.
• Installing fine-mesh screens over ventilation ports and attic vents.
• Using residual insecticides on the exterior surfaces of buildings during the autumn arrival period.
• Regular inspection of attics and crawl spaces to detect and manage early overwintering aggregations.
