European grapevine moth

Taxonomic position. The European grapevine moth (Polychrosis botrana, widely known as Lobesia botrana) belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Tortricidae. It is a major pest in viticulture, recognized globally for its ability to cause severe economic damage to grape production by feeding on flowers and ripening berries.

Crops affected. The primary host is the grapevine (*Vitis vinifera*). While the pest is highly specialized, it can occasionally develop on secondary hosts, including privet, barberry, dogwood, and various other woody plants. However, the most significant damage is consistently observed in commercial and wild vineyard environments.

Biology and life cycle. The moth typically completes 2 to 4 generations per year, depending on the local climate and temperature. It overwinters as a pupa within a silken cocoon protected by bark crevices or debris. Adults of the first generation emerge in spring to coincide with the budding and flowering of vines, setting the stage for subsequent infestation waves.

Nature of damage and harm. The first-generation larvae web together and consume flower clusters, often resulting in complete yield loss of those parts. Successive generations burrow into the berries, causing internal damage. The feeding sites serve as entry points for pathogens, particularly *Botrytis cinerea* (grey mold), which leads to fruit rot and significantly reduces the overall quality of the harvest.

Protection measures. Effective control requires a multifaceted integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

• Using pheromone traps for population monitoring and precise timing of interventions.
• Applying selective insecticides or biological control agents during peak egg-hatching periods.
• Implementing cultural practices such as canopy management to ensure better air circulation.
• Sanitation measures, including the removal of old bark and fallen debris where the pupae hibernate.
