The Grape fruit moth (Polychrosis cellifera) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Lepidoptera and the family Tortricidae. This species is known for its specialized feeding habits, which cause significant damage to viticulture across various regions, often mirroring the damage caused by the European grapevine moth.
The primary host for this pest is the grapevine (Vitis vinifera). The larvae (caterpillars) target the plant's reproductive structures, specifically feeding on flower buds, blossoms, and young berries. This feeding behavior not only destroys individual grapes but can lead to a substantial decrease in total yield.
The biological development of Polychrosis cellifera consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. The species may have multiple generations per year depending on environmental temperature and humidity. Overwintering occurs primarily in the pupal stage, with the insects hiding within silk cocoons tucked under the bark of vines or in wood crevices.
The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by webbed clusters where the insects feed. By tying flowers or berries together with silk, they create a protected micro-environment. This feeding leads to blossom drop or damaged berries, which frequently develop secondary infections such as gray mold (Botrytis cinerea), compromising the quality and viability of the grape clusters.
