These microscopic pests are known for their specialized feeding habits, specifically targeting woody plants. Within agricultural settings, they are recognized as significant pests that can cause substantial economic losses if not properly managed.
The primary crop host for this pest is the persimmon tree (*Diospyros*). Ponticulothrips primarily infest the leaves, causing structural changes to the foliage. Because they feed by piercing and sucking plant sap, they cause rapid depletion of nutrients from the leaf tissues, leading to severe physiological stress for the host plant.
