Praelongorthezia is a genus of insects belonging to the Ortheziidae family, often referred to as ensign scale insects. These pests are specialized plant parasites that are well-known for their unique morphological features, specifically the distinctive wax plates and ovisacs that cover their bodies, providing significant protection from environmental stressors.

This pest primarily attacks a variety of ornamental plants, greenhouse crops, and occasionally citrus varieties. Due to their ability to thrive in controlled environments, they often become a persistent issue for professional nurseries and botanical collections, where they hide in leaf axils and along veins, making early detection difficult.

The life cycle of Praelongorthezia involves several larval stages followed by the adult phase. Adult females are sessile, remaining attached to the host plant to feed continuously. Their reproduction is highly efficient, as the wax-coated ovisac acts as a nursery for eggs, protecting them from predators and preventing desiccation while the population expands across the host plant.

The damage caused by this pest is twofold: direct feeding damage and indirect secondary infection. By extracting plant sap, the insect causes chlorosis, leaf curling, and overall stunted growth. Furthermore, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage, disrupts photosynthesis, and leads to significant aesthetic and physiological decline of the plant.
